1,4-Dioxane

  • Translation: Contaminant (and always unlisted in ingredient labels)
  • Health Concern: Organ toxicity and irritation, reproductive harm, a carcinogen
  • Common Offenders: Products that sud

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic (EDTA)

  • Translation: Binding agent and penetration enhancer
  • Health Concern: Organ toxicity and irritation
  • Common Offenders: Moisturizers, cleansers, soap and body wash, and common cosmetics
  • Alter Egos: Disodium EDTA, Calcium Disodium EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA, and HEDTA, and anything else with -EDTA

Aluminum

  • Translation: Metallic element that blocks sweat ducts, preventing sweat from reaching the skin’s surface
  • Health Concern: Neurotoxicity, a carcinogen, endocrine disruption, organ toxicity, and irritation
  • Common Offenders: antiperspirant

BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole) and BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)

  • Status: Synthetic antioxidants used as preservatives in many cosmetics
  • Health Concern: Carcinogen, reproductive toxicity, skin irritant
  • Common Offenders: Many products that list “fragrance” as an ingredient

Butoxyethanol

  • Translation: Ether alcohol that functions as a fragrance additive
  • Health Concern: Carcinogen, endocrine disruption, may cause liver, kidney, and thyroid problems
  • Common Offenders: Hair, face, and body products

Coal Tar

  • Translation: Byproduct of coal processing, commonly used as a colorant or anti-dandruff agent.

Ethanolamines

  • Translation: Surfactant and pH adjuster

Formaldehyde

  • Translation: Preservative

Hydroquinone

  • Translation: Used for skin lightening
  • Health Concern: Carcinogen, increases the risk of skin cancer, organ toxicity, and irritation
  • Common Offenders: Skin whitening products, cleansers, moisturizers.

Methyl Cellosolve

  • Translation: Used as a solvent and for viscosity control
  • Health Concern: Skin irritation, cell damage and mutation, neurotoxicity, reproductive harm
  • Common Offenders: Anti-aging products
  • Alter Egos: Methoxyethanol

Mineral Oil

  • Translation: By-product of petroleum distillation, used as a moisturizer
  • Health Concern: Carcinogen, organ irritation, allergy trigger

  • Alter Egos: Liquid paraffin, liquid petrolatum

Parabens

  • Translation: The most widely used preservative in cosmetics

Phthalates (DBP, DEHP, DEP, DMP, and Others)

  • Translation: Used as a plasticizer, solubilizer, and denaturant

Polyethylene Glycol (PEG Compounds)

  • Translation: Petroleum-based compounds, widely used in cream bases of cosmetics as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers
  • Health Concern: Possible contamination with 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide (both are known carcinogens)

Resorcinol

  • Translation: Colorant, fragrance ingredient

Siloxanes

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

  • Translation: Used as a cleansing agent that produces suds, bubbles, and foam.
  • Health Concern: Contamination with carcinogen 1,4 -dioxane, organ toxicity, and irritation, allergy trigger
  • Common Offenders: Products that sud

Synthetic Fragrance

  • Translation: Scent agent that usually contains a complex mixture of chemicals.
